Learn About Arden Heights

Arden Heights is a neighborhood that feels like a literary escape, its name chosen in 1886 by developer Erastus Wiman as a tribute to the "Forest of Arden" from Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Originally a landscape of successional forests and freshwater wetlands, the area was transformed in 1971 when it became the site of New York City’s first large-scale planned urban development: Village Greens. This innovative design introduced the concept of self-contained "villages" with townhomes centered around shared common areas and loop streets (all named "Greens"). Later, the Aspen Knolls community followed, further defining Arden Heights as a pioneer in modern, amenity-rich suburban living on the South Shore.

✦ Why I Love Arden Heights ✦

Residents love Arden Heights for its "resort-at-home" lifestyle. Because of its planned roots, the neighborhood offers a level of community infrastructure—including multiple Olympic-sized pools, tennis courts, and private parklands—that is rare elsewhere in the city. It is a place where you can step out of a modern townhouse and immediately onto a nature trail.

The community is tight-knit and active, favored by those who want the quiet safety of a suburban enclave while remaining just a short drive from the shopping hubs of the South Shore and the West Shore.
